Scandinavian Green Roof Award 2021
Henrik Aspegren, president of Scandinavian Green Infrastructure Association & CEO of Sweden Water Research (Malmö Sweden)
The winner of the Scandinavian Green Roof Award will be announced.

Smart Blue Green Roofs
Dr Tom Young and Phil Williams BSc from STRI Group (Manchester, UK)
This talk will describe the methodology and process of a designing and building a smart blue-green roof system on a retrofit building in Manchester, UK. Data from the roof will be presented to showcase how the system works, and additional benefits provided by the smart technology.

Green Sponge Buildings in Scandinavia
Theis Raaschou Andersen, head of research at VIA University (Horsens, Denmark)
Green Sponge Buildings in Scandinavia is a new research project that will test and demonstrate how buildings can become an active climate adaptation solution in Scandinavian cities.

Blue Green City Lab - Cases
Tanja Hasselmark Mason, project leader at Green Roof Institute (Malmö, Sweden)
Short talk about Blue Green City Lab, a completed 5-year project and testbed for blue-green solutions in urban environments. Project partly financed by the Swedish innovation agency, Vinnova.
Insights and experiences, lessons learned and moving forward.

Irrigation of green walls
Lars Höglund, CEO of Butong (Uppsala, Sweden)
Automatic irrigation systems - how do they work and how to build your own. What parts are needed and what is most important to save water? How does the irrigation system affect the green space factor in the project and what factor actually has a living facade? Lars shares project experiences from Jordan to Uppsala.

ProGIreg project – nature for renewal
Isabelle Haymerle, Project assistant and administration at EFB (Vienna, Austria)
ProGIreg uses nature for urban regeneration with and for citizens! The project is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program and will run from June 2018 until 2023. ProGIreg stands for ‘productive Green Infrastructure for post-industrial urban regeneration’: nature for renewal.

Grönare Möllan – water flows in structural soils
Dr Tobias Emilsson, researcher at SLU (Malmö, Sweden)
Urban trees are of great importance for creating livable beautiful landscapes that sustain ecosystem services over time. In modern cities, there is a lack of underground space for sufficient root growth. We have investigated the root environment of urban trees in Malmö and Stockholm to better understand the challenges and potentials of using structural soils in dense urban environments. How can we design tree substrates that support healthy trees? What do we use? Can biochar help or are there alternative?

$900.000 Concrete Tank Avoided by Using a Detention-Type Green Roof!
Anna Zakrisson Ph.D, soil biologist at Green Roof Diagnostics (Berlin, Germany)
Saratoga Springs, USA: The project had almost been completed when it was realized that the stormwater solutions were under dimensioned. There was very little space available at grade, so the only apparent solution was to construct a $900,000 below-grade concrete tank, which would have ended the project due to cost limitations. Green Roof Diagnostics helped them save the project by helping them manage the stormwater on the roof through careful hydrologic modeling of a detention-type green roof concept (Purple-Roof Concept).

Resilio – adaptive urban water management
Joyce Langewen, policy advisor climate adaptation at City of Amsterdam
Merle van der Kroft, project consultant/engineer at MetroPolder Company
(Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Resilio is a project funded through the Urban Innovative Actions Initiative from the European Union in which Amsterdam repurposes 10,000m2 of social housing rooftops from climate-vulnerable neighbourhoods by developing a network of smart blue-green.

3-30-300 - The rule for healthier and greener cities!
Tove Lineskär, project leader at Green Roof Institute (Malmö, Sweden)
The 3-30-300 rule for greener and healthier cities is gaining a lot of traction globally. This is a short talk to explain the rule.
Applying the 3-30-300 rule will improve and expand the local urban forest in many cities, and with that promote health, wellbeing, and resilience.

Elevated Engagement: Rooftop farms and their Role in the Urban Ecosystem
Pete Ellis, senior project manager at Recover Green Roofs (Somerville, USA)
Through the lens of community driven and institutional rooftop farms, specifically the Boston Medical Center Rooftop Farm, we will explore the transformative power of rooftop farms, their place within our sustainable food systems, and what it takes to get your farm off the ground!

LooPi - plant-based public urinal
Heinz Gattringer, Senior researcher at alchemia-nova (Vienna, Austria)
LooPi closes the water and the nutrient cycle on-site: the plant-based unisex urinal treats wastewater in an integrated vertical constructed wetland ecosystem. Treated wastewater is reused for flushing. Nutrients are stored in a biochar based sorbent and made available for agricultural use.
